08 May When Do I Need to Remove Old Attic Insulation?

Because most attics are out-of-sight, many homeowners tend to ignore the space. And while attic insulation removal might not be at the top of the list, energy efficiency issues will likely crop up from time to time. This is particularly true when energy bills (winter and summer) are high.
With energy efficiency issues, the focus is often on attic insulation. Is there enough insulation material installed? Does the existing insulation perform at peak? Are things at a point where attic insulation removal may be required? All of these are relevant questions that need answers.
In Toronto, and throughout southern Ontario, attic insulation is essential in every home. When the insulation is performing well, the home is kept comfortably warm in winter and comfortably cool in summer. Beyond the aspects of comfort, seasonal energy efficiency is also maintained.
When Should Attic Insulation Be Removed?
Attic insulation doesn’t necessarily have to be removed when it gets old. When quality insulation has been installed, it doesn’t become obsolete just because it’s old. True – insulation performance may be compromised, but this doesn’t mean that complete removal and replacement is needed.
Homeowners concerned about the performance of their attic insulation may be dealing with a variety of issues. There may have been a rodent infiltration. There may have been water damage. There may even be a mold infiltration. All of these require professional attention and a remedy.
Whatever the issue, it’s wise to get a professional attic inspection that will assess the insulation materials and check for any existing problems. Once inspected, it may be clear that only certain parts of the attic are problematic, and there’s no need for complete attic insulation removal.
Water Damage in the Attic
When there’s water damage in the attic, insulation material is usually compromised. Likely, the R-Value of the material will be decreased, and sometimes the waterlogged materials will promote mold growth. Here, damaged insulation will need removal and in some cases complete removal.
Rodent/Insect Infiltration
Rodents and insects often build “homes” in attic insulation. When the insulation is contaminated, it must be removed and the contaminated area must be disinfected. If left unattended, insulation that’s contaminated could pose a health risk. This is where professional remediation is needed.
Mold Growth in the Attic
When attic insulation is moisture-compromised, it’s an ideal environment for mold. In serious situations, professional remediation is required, after which new insulation can be installed. Once discovered, mold growth cannot be left unattended, particularly with the potential health risks.
Vermiculite & Asbestos
Vermiculite insulation (with asbestos) poses potential health risks for occupants. If the material is undisturbed there’s no cause for concern. However, insulation professionals will recommend removal and remediation to eliminate any chance of danger. This should not be a DIY project.
